Sgt. Lane is the first Castle Shannon Officer to attend the academy since his father, former Castle Shannon Police Chief Harold Lane, graduated from the 186th session in 1996. The academy’s mission is “…to support, promote and enhance the personal and professional development of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for complex, dynamic and contemporary challenges through innovative techniques, facilitating excellence in education and research and forging partnerships throughout the world.”
The academy is an invitation-only training facility and many candidates wait 5-10 years before being accepted into the program. Sgt Lane was nominated for the program by Chief Truver, a graduate of the 225th session of the FBINA and the President of the Western Pa Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates for 2011-2012. While reading his commendation, Chief Truver said, “…he is to be commended for his selection and completion of the rigorous course of study.”
Sergeant Lane is the department’s Special Programs and Events Supervisor, in charge of the K9 program, Tactical Team members, Crime Prevention/D.A.R.E, and Bike Patrol and he is responsible for coordinating community education and promotion events. He was recently named a Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator for the Borough.
Officer Gary Watkins was also recognized by Council and received a commendation for his role as Acting Sergeant while Sgt Lane was in training.

Chief Truver said’ “His contribution to the department is appreciated and he is to be commended for his hard work and commitment to the agency.”
