Message from
POLICE CHIEF KEN TRUVER

January 1, 2010

On behalf of the officers and staff of the Castle Shannon Police Department, best wishes for a healthy, happy and safe new year in 2010.

To help keep you safe and informed, we have added more links to the main police page, describing sites for local and regional emergency alerts.

Visitors to this site now have several options for community alert notifications, to include receiving messages by e-mail, text messages, cell phones or home phones to learn about missing person(s) (A Child is Missing), recent crimes (CrimeReports.com), state/regional Alerts for weather and other emergencies, (AlertPA) and local alerts and community news through (NIXLE.com).

All of these services are free of charge, but require subscriptions for access. (Other local communities have spent tens of thousands of dollars for devices set up to contact residents to provide this information). We encourage you to visit the posted links, review the descriptions of the various services, and to sign up for the tools which appeal to your interest.

It continues to be our goal to educate and inform the residents of Castle Shannon about crime and safety issues which affect their quality of life.

We have described the “A Child is Missing” site and the “CrimeReports” sites in previous postings.

The new additions to the links page are geared towards community notifications in close to real time.

"When emergencies, severe weather, and other life and health threatening incidents occur, Pennsylvanians can be among the first to know by signing up for AlertPA," said Governor Rendell. "The system allows citizens to choose to be notified about emergencies and other announcements."

The NIXLE site promises to “provide communities throughout the country with news and information that is both proximate and personally relevant.”

The value of any super database is directly proportionate to the amount of data entered and available for retrieval and dissemination. In plain English, this means that these tools will have more value if the sender (Us) has a larger audience (You). If we send out community messages and no one is signed up to receive them, then we will not be successful in accomplishing our goal of providing useful and timely information.

As always, please feel free to contact the Police Department with questions or comments.
