Message from
POLICE CHIEF KEN TRUVER

May 1, 2010

Dear residents and visitors to the Castle Shannon Borough Police webpage,

Each May during National Police Week the nation pauses to recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement.

For 2010, National Police Week is recognized from Sunday May 9, through Saturday May 15.

Following are various excerpts, facts and figures which were gleaned from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website.

Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress, National Police Week pays special tribute to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Ceremonies are held in Washington, DC, and in communities across the country.

In the nation’s capital, National Police Week features a number of special events and moving tributes.

Although, the week is set aside to memorialize those officers who laid down their lives, in the ultimate sacrifice and service, to those people they swore to protect, it is fitting that we should also recognize the officers who continue to protect and serve, in the face of danger, every day.

Today in the United States, some 900,000 law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for the safety and protection of others. They serve with valor and distinction – and with great success. Federal statistics show that violent and property crime rates in the United States are at historic lows, thanks in large measure to the dedicated service of the men and women of law enforcement.

That protection comes at a price, however. Each year, there are approximately 16,000 assaults on law enforcement officers, resulting in nearly 60,000 injuries. Sadly, over the last decade, an average of 160 officers a year have been killed in the line of duty. And throughout U.S. history, nearly 19,000 law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is dedicated to honoring all of America’s law enforcement heroes – those who have died in the line of duty and those who continue to serve and protect. That mission is accomplished through the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, as well as programs such as Officer of the Month, Officer Roll Call and others.

On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 53 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1792, nearly 19,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice

Before anyone in suburbia is bold enough to wax philosophical and say, “It can’t happen here.” we have sad reminders very recently that violent crime and assaults on police officers can and do happen, in and around our quiet communities. These officers were all shot and killed in the line of duty in our area.

We in the Castle Shannon Police Department recognize these officers and all fallen brothers and sisters officers, and we offer our gratitude to them, and their families for allowing them to serve in this noble profession.

We also offer our gratitude and appreciation to the fellow officers, who continue to put on their uniform every working day, and protect us in our own communities against the criminal element, and in continued service to the residents of their jurisdictions.
