Message from POLICE CHIEF KEN TRUVER
June 1, 2010
Dear Residents and Visitors to the Castle Shannon Police website:
The National Safety Council (NSC) traditionally hosts National Safety Month every June to promote safety throughout the country. This year's observances target the most significant reasons for unintentional deaths at home, in the workplace, and on the road, with the week of 2-6 June specifically set aside to encourage emergency preparedness messaging. There is a host of information on safety preparedness at the FEMA website http://www.fema.gov.
When the discussion of “..on the road” leads to statistics for traffic related injuries and fatalities, it always bears mentioning the dangers of Alcohol-Related crashes and consequences of inadequate seat-belt use.
These concerns are especially prominent around the end of the school year, prom season, and while families prepare to take flight for vacations and summer travel.
This is also a good time to list some homeowner safety tips for vacation security.
- Make sure all electrical appliances are turned off.
- Lock all windows and doors.
- Arrange to have the newspaper and mail held until your return, or have them picked up by a trusted neighbor.
- Arrange to have your lawn mowed while you're away. Ask a neighbor to set out your trash on collection day and then retrieve empty cans and recycling bins the same day.
- Let a trusted neighbor know you will be away and have them keep an eye on your home. It's a good idea to leave your vacation address and telephone number with a neighbor so you can be reached in case of an emergency.
- Never leave your house key hidden outside your home.
- Set timers on interior lights.
- Make sure to unplug televisions, computers and appliances susceptible to lightning and power surges.
- Advise your alarm company and local police if you will be gone for an extended period.
- Store jewelry and valuable items in a safe-deposit box.
- Arrange for the care of pets.
As summer approaches, please be safe, ALWAYS wear your seatbelt and NEVER drink and DRIVE.
