POLICE CHIEF KEN TRUVER

October 8, 2009

The American Automobile Association has declared the week of October 4-10, 2009 “Heads Up Driving Week”, according to a recent article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Their studies show that inattentive drivers are a factor in up to 25 percent of all vehicle crashes.

In this age of multi-tasking, and with the ever-increasing responsibilities of home and work life, we are all trying to accomplish a long laundry list of things in the short span of time, in an effort to “get it all done”.

The temptation is great to squeeze in a phone call here and/or a text message there, while we commute back and forth to work, or on the way to run errands. But, given the statistics of crash information, and the inherent danger of taking our attention from the road, perhaps we could all refrain from the distractions of communication devices and instead use our drive time to “decompress”.

Perhaps you would consider using the time behind the wheel as a pseudo therapy session where you “take a break” from the daily grind and focus on one thing at a time (safe driving). Deep breath in, slow breath out.

There are current initiatives in traffic enforcement focusing on aggressive driving, seatbelt safety, Driving Under the Influence Prevention, etc…. and now distracted drivers.

In the first month of my tenure as Chief of Police for the Borough of Castle Shannon, we’ve fielded many complaints from residents about traffic volume and speed on our side streets. We are a very densely populated community on a major thoroughfare (Rte 88) routing traffic between Pittsburgh and the south suburbs. Most of the traffic coming through the Borough is trying to find alternative routes around the traffic congestion.

The Castle Shannon Police Department is committed to our mandate to protect the residents, and one of our major responsibilities is traffic enforcement. We will use the most efficient methods to deter violators through aggressive enforcement, awareness campaigns and available engineering programs.

Residents with complaints about traffic problems can bring them to the attention of the police department by contacting me at the email address listed below. CSPD will deploy officers to trouble spots as call volume and shift manpower allow. We also have a speed trailer for display and we coordinate with Council, the Borough traffic engineer and the solicitor to meet PA regulations on signage and other safety measures.

While we strive to meet our obligations for traffic enforcement, perhaps you’ll consider doing your part, by bringing problem areas to our attention and being a considerate driver…….In through the nose, out through the mouth.
