Message from
POLICE CHIEF KEN TRUVER

November 1, 2009

The Police Department has been working with our IT vendor, HTM Designs to bring the residents of Castle Shannon up to date, useful information as well as provide a communications medium for idea exchange. We are grateful to HTM (owned by local residents) for their responsive cooperation and design of this site.

As technology improves and ideas develop for use of the website, we will continue to bring you Police news to keep your interest, and provide you with tools to keep you safe and informed.

The most recent addition to our toolbox is an affiliation with the group “A Child Is Missing”. This non-profit organization provides a free nationwide program to aid police agencies in the event of a reported missing child.

We have added a link to the website on the right side of our main page. When you click the link, you will be taken to a website, describing the organization and their mission.

Essentially, the group has access to publicly published phone numbers in a given region, and they “blast” phone calls to the area, with descriptions of the missing child/person and the circumstances of their disappearance. There is a link on the website, where you the resident can provide additional contact information, cell phones, pagers, texting numbers etc… in an effort to garnish as much contact information possible, to assist law enforcement in their efforts.

The agency will not publish these additional numbers or sell them to another entity.

A host of other agencies in Allegheny County use the services of “A Child is Missing”. While we hope we never have to use their service, we are confident that the additional assistance will be helpful, and we encourage your participation.

We have also formed a partnership with CrimeReports.com. This privately held company works with law enforcement agencies to publish and map crime information. The Castle Shannon Police Department is the first agency in Western Pennsylvania to initialize the program in our area.

CrimeReports takes crime data from our records management software and maps it for easy viewing for residents and visitors to our website. The goal of the program is to provide transparency and open communication between the residents and the police department, and to keep residents informed of crimes and police activity in their neighborhood. It is our hope that when residents are informed of criminal activity, they will be more inclined to get involved, stay vigilant , and call police when presented with suspicious activity.

Please visit the link to CrimeReports on our webpage and navigate through the various tools available. There are fields available to add email addresses for daily alerts, blogs, facebook contacts, and additional methods to receive information relative to crime and police activity in Castle Shannon. The site subscriptions are FREE to residents, and proprietary police information is kept secure by parameters set in our agreement with the vendor.

Lastly, as mentioned in our October message, traffic complaints continue to be the most prominent issue brought to the attention of the Police Department. In our continuing effort to open communication channels, we have developed a link on the left side of our page titled “TRAFFIC COMPLAINTS and ALERTS” where residents can complete fields for traffic issues. Patrol officers will be deployed as call volume and manpower permit, to address the complaint. Police administration will be keeping surveys of those directed patrols, to determine validity of the complaint, and to assist with consideration of additional control measures.

All of these measures require cooperation and involvement by the Police Department and the Residents in order to be successful. Thank you in advance for your anticipated assistance.
